NAT17National/AccidentHimachal begins probe into bus accident that killed 46Shimla, Nov 5 IANS The Himachal Pradesh government has began a probe into the accident in Shimla district in which 46 passengers were killed, an official said Wednesday.The additional district magistrate law and order will conduct an inquiry and submit the report to the district administration within 15 days, Shimla District Commissioner J.S. Rana told IANS.The government has announced Rs.50,000 compensation to the kin of the dead and expenses of the injured would be borne by the state government. Most of the dead were from Shimla district.The ill-fated private bus was coming to the state capital from Kumarsain town when it fell into the 200 metre gorge near Fagu, 25 km from here. Eyewitnesses said the bus was descending a steep gradient when the driver probably failed to negotiate a hairpin bend and the vehicle rolled down the gorge. A police official said that there were 186 bus accidents in 2004 in which 179 people died. Out of these, 152 pertained to private buses while Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation buses were involved in only 34 mishaps.In 2006, private buses accounted for 131 accidents of the total 158 accidents in the state in which 146 people were killed.--Indo-Asian News Servicevg/rd/jg227 Words05111308

NAT25National/LawLok Adalats to settle 250,000 cases in Punjab, HaryanaChandigarh, Oct 12 IANS Special 'Lok Adalats' public courts to be held for two days in December this year across Punjab, Haryana and the union territory of Chandigarh are targeting to dispose off over 250,000 cases pending under the jurisdiction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court here, an official said.The first-ever mega Lok Adalats, which have been christened 'Samadhan-2008', will be held at several places in both states Dec 20 and 21.The initiative for the mega disposal of cases has come from the new Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, who joined this High Court in August this year.Hundreds of judges and law officers under the jurisdiction of the High Court are working over time to make the mega Lok Adalats a success. Even trainee judicial officers in both the states have been engaged by the High Court to help in sorting out pending cases in various categories.The High Court has a pendency of over 260,000 law cases - some of them dating back to 1950s."Officials from both states and Chandigarh should cooperate for the disposal of maximum number of cases at this event. Departments concerned should coordinate with legal services authorities and make maximum people aware about these," Justice Thakur told a meeting of judicial officers and officials of both states here last week.The Punjab state legal services authority PSLSA officials said that the special campaign was aimed at disposing off pending civil and compoundable cases.Various cases would be taken up during the mega Lok Adalats for on the spot settlement, said Punjab's chief secretary Ramesh Inder Singh.Cases under Punjab Tenancy Act, Land Revenue Act, Punjab Village Common Land Acts, Public Premises Ejectment Act, Northern India Canal and Drainage Act, Revenue cases, partition and mutation proceedings, Land Acquisition Act and compensation disputes, Cooperative Societies Act and recovery proceedings, Election petitions and matters pending before the executive authorities under various relevant laws relating to urban and rural local bodies, Excise and Taxation cases, cases under Electricity Act and Motor Vehicles Accident claims would be taken up at the mega Lok Adalats.The Punjab and the Haryana governments have issued directions to officials of all departments concerned to list pending cases category-wise so that these can be disposed off.The Punjab chief secretary urged litigants and their counsels for full participation and cooperation during the mega Lok Adalats so that their cases could be settled on the spot and justice could be delivered at the earliest. "The total number of litigants and counsels at various places will run into thousands on both days of the mega event," a law officer at the high court said here.Haryana last year had become the first state in the country to have a mobile court in a remote and backward area in the Jhajjar district of the state. People accused him of being a 'wizard' who hypnotised young girls and made them do his household chores. No one has been arrested so far," an officer at Hanskhali police station told reporters.According to district sources, Dolui came to live in Hanskhali in 2007 after losing his wife, two daughters, son-in-laws and four grandchildren in a road accident."Dolui was an introvert and hardly interacted with his neighbours. But he was very friendly with the young girls, in whom he saw reflections of his daughter and grand daughters. The girls, too, volunteered to look after him, and they lovingly called him 'Buro-dadu' old grandfather," said sources not wishing to be identified.Dolui's neighbours, however, believe that he was a black magic practitioner."Dolui hypnotised our daughters. He became their prime focus since their first meeting. Our girls even stole food from the kitchen to feed him. We earlier requested him to leave this place. But he didn't listen," said Sunil Jana, a neighbour.About 15 neighbours dragged Dolui out of his residence and beat him up with walking sticks and bricks. New Delhi, Sept 5 ANI: After nine years of court trials, the prime accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, Sanjeev Nanda was finally sentenced to five years in jail by a Delhi court today. Among the three other convicts, businessman Rajiv Gupta was awarded one year jail term while his two servants, Bhola Nath and Shyam Singh, were sentenced to six months jail term for destruction of evidence as they had washed the blood stains and victims' flesh pieces from the offending vehicle at a house in Golf Links area here.On Tuesday, Nanda and the trio were found guilty in the case, in which six persons, including three constables, were killed in 1999.The court convicted Nanda under the Section 304 2 of the Indian Penal Code IPC, dealing with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The law prescribes ten years imprisonment as maximum punishment.The court acquitted Manik Kapoor, a friend of Nanda, who was in the vehicle at the time of the accident.The ten-year-old case involving Nanda, son of arms dealer Suresh Nanda and grandson of former Navy chief S.M. Nanda, allegedly in an inebriated state is accused of mowing down seven people with his high speeding BMW car in the wee hours of January 10, 1999 in Lodhi Colony area. Six persons died on the spot while one survived.Earlier, another co-accused, Sidhartha Gupta, son of Rajiv Gupta, accused by the police of being present in the car at the time of the accident, was later discharged by the Delhi High Court.
